뉴욕 지하철 요금이 5월 31일부터 인상된다.
어제 지하철 공사의 요금인상과 운행서비스제한에 대한 표결이 찬성12표, 반대 1표로 겂도 없이 통과되었다.
이제 두달 후면, 싱글라이드 요금이 현행 $2에서 $2.50으로 $0.50 인상되며
일주일 정액권은 $25에서 $31로 $6이, 한달 정액권은 $81에서 $103으로 무려 $22이 오르게 된다.

알만한 사람은 알겠지만, 뉴욕의 지하철은 100년의 역사라는 것을 빼면 내세울 것이 하나도 없다.
차라리 그런 역사 따위는 박물관에 기증하고 깨끗한 지하철을 타고 싶은 것이 모든 뉴요커들의 심정일 것이다.
지하철 티켓이 무슨 동물원 입장권도 아니고 항시 역사에는 고양이만한 쥐가 돌아다니고,
밤사이 홈리스들이 내지른 소변 냄새를 비롯한 악취가 계단과 열차 내에 진동을 하며,
툭하면 해당 역에 정차를 하지않아 몇 블럭을 걸어 다른 역으로 걸어야하는 일도 다반사다.
한번은 빈자리에 앉았다가 그곳에 얌전히 고여있는 소변에 엉덩이 부분이 크게 젖기까지 했다.
뭐, 휴대폰이 터지지 않는 것은 이 상황에서 너무나 사치스런 요구이고..

이 정도 되면 비용을 투자해서 낙후된 부분들을 보수하면 되지 않느냐고 반문할 수도 있겠지만,
빈번히 발생하는 유니온의 임금인상 요구와 밑빠진 독에 물을 채우는 모양으로 돈을 빨아먹는 시설 보수공사에
들어가는 비용이 너무나 많기 때문에 정작 요금을 인상하고도 어떤 서비스도 제공하지 못하는 것이다.

게다가 이번 경제위기로 인해 운행서비스에도 제한을 두게 되었는데, 적잖은 역사의 티켓부스가 제한적으로
오픈을 하고, 시간별로 운행 열차량을 줄이며, 일부 버스 노선 역시 폐지 혹은 단축 운행을 한다고 한다.
참 이 어려운 시기에 서민들의 가슴을 폭폭하게 만드는 뉴스다.


MTA Votes to Raise Transit Fares and Cut Service

Today, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted 12 to 1 to pass their "doomsday plan" to raise
transit fares to $2.50 and implement widespread service cuts as of May 31, 2009.

The goal of the plan is to balance an MTA budget deficit of approximately $1.2 billion. The MTA is required
by law to pass a balanced budget. Board member Norman Seabrook was the only voter to oppose the fare
hikes and service cuts.

For weeks, New Yorkers have held onto hope that Albany would pass measures to bail out the MTA and
make the doomsday plan unnecessary, but state lawmakers were unable to reach an agreement regarding
an alternative solution. Experts believe that Albany may yet come to the rescue before the changes take
effect on May 31st.

Mayor Bloomberg has been very vocal about his position on the issue. In a statement today, he said,
"I do think it’s the responsibility of Albany to come up with a plan.”

Here's how the fare hikes will impact your commuting budget as of May 31, 2009:
The price for a single ride will jump from $2 to $2.50
The cost of a 7-day MetroCard pass will increase from $25 to $31
The cost of a 14-day MetroCard pass will rise from $47 to $59
The cost of a 30-day MetroCard pass will jump from $81 to $103.
Service cuts will eliminate some bus and subway routes and reduce service on others.
